Cancer occurs when a cell in the body loses control of its mechanism and reproduces on its own without being controlled by the body. All types of cancer usually occur when cells in the body grow at an unusual rate in terms of size and shape. It can also spread to other organs and tissues.
The Most Common Types of Cancer Among Women
Among the most common cancers in women are breast cancer, cervical cancer and ovarian cancer.
According to Obstetrics & Gynaecology Resident Consultant from ANDORRA Women & Children Hospital, Dr Maryam Sakinah Mohamad Rom, breast cancer often occurs in women over the age of 50.
In contrast, ovarian cancer is more common among younger women while cervical cancer is a type of cancer that can be prevented and treated early. Early prevention can be done by undergoing a health screening to detect the presence of cancer cells.
Types of Tests to Detect Cells of Cervical Cancer
Some of the tests that can be taken to detect the presence of cells of cervical cancer are pap smear and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) tests. These types of tests are among the most effective ones in preventing cervical cancer.
Although most women often avoid doing a pap smear test in fear of pain, it is one of the best ways to ensure the state of one's health. However, this kind of mindset is more worrying especially if the woman experiences gynaecology problems such as smelly discharge, irregular periods or bleeding during intercourse.
Every woman, regardless of age is advised to see a gynaecologist for routine health screenings to ensure your health is always in good condition.
